1.-U. ID 23-919 ***Bill B-16 - (Intro'd 5/25/2023)(For Adoption) Adding Article 21 and Article 22 to Chapter 10 of the Fresno Municipal Code, Prohibiting Impeding on Sidewalks Within 500 Feet from Sensitive Areas Including Schools, Childcare Facilities, Public Parks, Public Libraries, Warming and Cooling Centers, and City-Permitted Shelters for the Unhoused (Subject to Mayor's Veto)
I am a resident of District 3 and voicing my opposition to the addition of Articles 21 & 22 to the Fresno Municipal Code. This ordinance solves no problems and in fact, criminalizes being unhoused. Our shelters and systems of support are not adequate to serve the needs that will skyrocket if public space is prohibited for the unhoused to occupy. I ask that the council put maximum effort into homelessness and public safety PREVENTION. We need access to real housing solutions, not shelters. Our parks, libraries, warming and cooling centers, and other public service areas are equipped to connect unhoused folks with social services if only our city and county would prioritize the financial support that would allow them to do so.
