While I am glad the city is making significant progress in creating shelters, and eventual plans for tiny home communities, there are pressing needs for more immediate solutions. We are coming into hot summer days and our vulnerable unhoused people will be at even greater risk. They don’t typically use cooling centers as that means abandoning their survival gear. If more of them were in a managed safe camp, ways of providing access to cooling center’s would be much easier - and even on site. WANI has provided a basic model that has proven to work and could do an even better job with minimal funding and support from the city. The camp has already helped numerous people recover from horrible health problems and dangerous situations. This has saved the city and county not only resources and money but provided a way for these citizens to survive and begin to thrive. Please support a 3 month pilot project that WANI can run. Other cities have already been using the safe camp model with good success. You can make a difference in people’s lives in a matter of weeks - the time it takes to secure and set up a tent structure camp. Since we already have that part done, we can just expand and improve the existing camp community. Thank you. Carol Kim
