My name is Ashley Soleno and I am a student at Fresno State University. A right to Counsel will ensure families and residents a better living situation without worrying about eviction and poverty. Pass the right to Counsel!
My name is Jessica Ramirez I am a Fresno resident. I know one eviction can change someone's life forever and my thing is if your able to help make a change why not do it ? Use the power we all have to help community and families in our community.
My name is Janine Nkosi. I am a part of a coalition of renters, Fresno State students and professors, and community-based organizations who care deeply about our community. We know that a Right to Counsel in housing court will prevent homelessness and benefit thousands of vulnerable renters, especially small children and the elderly. Housing is a fundamental human need, especially during a global pandemic. With COVID19 cases rising once again and looming over families and individuals-- stable housing is a matter of public health, a matter of life or death. Our homes are more essential now than ever-- they’re our workplaces, our classrooms, our hospitals– our homes are our everything! Fresno has been leading the Central Valley in passing policies and protections to stabilize housing. Thank you for rising to the challenge of this moment and working together to protect our community. In October, two motions were made to explore another absolutely critical piece of a holistic approach to housing stabilization -- a Civil Right to Counsel. Even though many tenants have legal rights that would preserve their homes and entitle them to relief, the laws are complex and confusing and so is the court system. Without legal defense, their rights are almost valueless. Fresno once again has the opportunity to lead the Central Valley. We ask the Council to provide an update on the motions made in October and urge you to pass a RTC.
Hello, my name is Alexandra Alvarado. My hope is that Fresno will join the many cities around the country to implement a Civil Right to Counsel program. We have the opportunity to ensure every renter in Fresno has access to comprehensive legal representation, giving families a stronger chance at sheltering in the place they call home. I urge the City Council to establish a Right to Counsel program that will give folks a fighting chance in court, and provide the chance for our committees to grow and thrive.
