Good morning, my name is Lety Valencia. I have spent the last few years working with families impacted by the housing crisis. Now with COVID-19, thousands of families are at risk of eviction. I join with a broad coalition of Fresno residents in urging the City Council to establish a COVID-19 emergency legal defense fund as phase one of a city-wide Right to Counsel program. The City of Fresno has an opportunity to lead the Central Valley.
My name is Jim Grant retired (July 31, 2020) Director of Social Justice Ministry for the Diocese of Fresno. The Diocese of Fresno is well aware of the housing crisis in Fresno, and Bishop Brennan has already endorsed the effort to abolish evictions during the pandemic. With tens of thousands of renters with their backs to the wall, today I once again join him and the many organizations (religious and civic) in urging the Fresno City Council to establish the urgently needed COVID-19 emergency legal defense fund as the first step toward a city-wide Right to Counsel program,
My name is Alexandra Alvarado and I am a Community Organizer with Faith in the Valley. Families and individuals now more than ever need a place to call home, a safe and affordable place for shelter. I want many to be proud to call Fresno their home, a place where families are not afraid of displacement or unlawful evictions and can be a part of growing healthy community. Along with other Fresno community members, I want to urge City Council to establish a COVID-19 emergency legal defense fund as phase one of a city wide Right to Counsel.
My name is Dr. Janine Nkosi. I am a professor of sociology at Fresno State and the Regional Advisor for Faith in the Valley. I have spent a great deal of time working alongside residents and Fresno State students to research the housing crisis. Every year a growing number of Fresno renters are displaced because rents rise, but wages remain stagnant. Now with COVID-19, and at no fault of their own, tens of thousands are at risk of eviction. I join with a broad coalition of Fresno residents in urging the City Council to establish a COVID-19 emergency legal defense fund as phase one of a city-wide Right to Counsel.
