Amendments used to extend political office is a slippery slope. To even entertain the idea that lawmakers and those in political office can extend their even once, will open the possibility of amending term lengths again.
I for one, would not want to see our elected official tarnish their legacies by being the ones to allow this preverbal “can of worms” move forward. Best regards.
Extension of terms create multigenerational governing. People who really care about their community will hand the baton to the next generation by way of fair and equal elections without having to increase terms which can escalate to multiple extensions of such terms . It’s time to welcome a new generation of representatives that represent this changing county. The population is not made up of multi-generational residents that have only lived in fresno county. There are many transplants that have established roots here, that arrive with new ideas not only for them but for everyone.
If the county were a non profit organization it would be easy to say that the leader has Founders Syndrome. They just can’t let go and in doing so cause the org to atrophy. We dont need elected mayors syndrome here. You do what you can and you move on. Public service should not be used to become a career politician. It’s time to move on. Sincerely , a home owner who pays property taxes.
I respectfully oppose the proposed Fresno City Charter amendment that would allow the Mayor and City Councilmembers to serve three consecutive terms.
The current two-consecutive-term limit strikes an appropriate balance between allowing elected officials enough time to accomplish their goals while ensuring regular opportunities for new leadership and fresh perspectives. Extending the limit to three consecutive terms would increase the advantage of incumbents, making it more difficult for qualified new candidates to compete and reducing political accountability.
Please reject this proposed charter amendment and preserve the existing two-consecutive-term limit. Thank you for considering my comments.
