I oppose the Entertainment Zone for Street Hop. There is already underage drinking happening (without any authority intervention), and this will only exacerbate it. This will also hurt vendors as insurance cost may go up do to more inebriated people walking around and damaging art & property. And what about bathrooms? Are businesses expected to open their customer bathrooms to the general public or are people going to be urinating on the street due to the long lines at businesses that allow the general public? Are vendors expected to front another bill? Cost of fees have already shot up for them, a once free event. And now with attendance of patrons continuing to drop, how will artists make any profit? Having people walk around with drinks will no longer make this a family friendly event, furthering the decline of attendance. This will also raise drunk driving as it will become harder to tell if people are being over served. Please keep our artists, small businesses, families, and public safe by opposing the entertainment zone
With the uprising violence we have seen taken place in during arthop/street hop, this entertainment zone would further encourage it. There is already drinking happening outside in the open with designated areas. There has been a stabbing that happened and then a fight the following month. The stabbing was described as "insignificant" by CEO of the Downtown Fresno Partnership Elliot Balch because the name was "arthop" and not "streethop" and that different procedures have been put into place. This raises many concerns about public safety. The fight that occurred during "street hop" was completely handled with negligence. Police did not get involved until attendees yelled at them to. Families that would want to enjoy a marketed "family friendly" event will not have to option to avoid intoxicated people to the best of their ability (including minors) because just staying out of the breweries will not matter if there is open drinking in the streets. Fresno is ranked top 5 in the nation with the most DUI's, why add and encourage this issue. We do not need an entertainment zone in our downtown Fresno. We need to recenter artist to truly make it family friendly and shift the culture away from a party scene or club like experience.
